﻿{"id":5281,"date":"2021-10-05T11:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-10-05T09:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sortlist.co.uk\/blog\/?p=5281"},"modified":"2024-11-27T10:01:58","modified_gmt":"2024-11-27T09:01:58","slug":"peso-model","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sortlist.co.uk\/blog\/peso-model\/","title":{"rendered":"PESO Model: What It Can Bring to Marketing and PR"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>PESO marketing model<\/strong> is an excellent method to organize your ideas and efforts so that all areas of marketing are addressed. <\/p>\n<p>Even though this model originated in the field of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sortlist.co.uk\/public-relations\/united-kingdom-gb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">public relations<\/a>, it may be an invaluable tool for all marketers, regardless of their marketing experience or expertise.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is The PESO Model?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>PESO<\/strong> stands for &#8220;paid,&#8221; &#8220;earned,&#8221; &#8220;shared,&#8221; and &#8220;owned&#8221; media, in that order. Each of these four forms of <strong>media<\/strong> and communication methods is represented by one of these four categories.<\/p>\n<p>It is a way of categorizing all of a brand&#8217;s marketing channels into distinct divisions. University professors would lecture about the distinctions between paid and earned media initiatives. <\/p>\n<p>Publishers would put up barriers inside their company to prevent advertising funds (paid media) from affecting editorial content (earned media). <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sortlist.co.uk\/advertising\/united-kingdom-gb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Advertising agencies <\/a>and public relations firms emerged as two distinct organizations from these segregated specialties.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While <strong>advertising<\/strong> firms concentrated on creative and paid media tactics, <strong>public relations<\/strong> professionals worked to build the greatest connections with journalists while also providing crisis communications and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sortlist.co.uk\/blog\/pr-planning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PR strategy<\/a>. Advertising agencies have traditionally paid for distribution, but PR has never done so.<\/p>\n<p>A third component, owned media, has always existed to reflect material that has been created and released by a business. <\/p>\n<p>Owned media earned its place among paid and earned media as a go-to channel for <strong>marketing<\/strong> as the internet-enabled businesses publish more cost-effectively. However, it languished in a no-man&#8217;s-land between <strong>public relations<\/strong> and <strong>advertising<\/strong> for a long period, with neither side taking ownership.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the fast use of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sortlist.co.uk\/digital-marketing\/united-kingdom-gb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">digital marketing<\/a> and <strong>social media<\/strong>, the Paid-Earned-Owned model eventually broke down around 2008. The following developments in the publishing and <strong>advertising<\/strong> environment contributed to the model&#8217;s demise:<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From Paid-Earned-Owned to PESO<\/h3>\n<p>-As prospects and customers became their own media brands, sharing and posting information on social networks, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sortlist.co.uk\/blog\/category\/marketing\/social-media\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">social media<\/a> provided a new method of distribution. These content creators have a harder time fitting into the Paid-Earned-Owned model.<\/p>\n<p>-As publishers sought new ways to monetize their media enterprises, the boundaries between <strong>advertising<\/strong> and journalism were blurring. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sortlist.co.uk\/blog\/sponsored-links\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sponsored content <\/a>evolved from advertorials, and branded content teams were established within publishers.<\/p>\n<p>-Because anybody can post on the internet, publishers have lost some respect. Consumers no longer care where the material comes from since they get it through an aggregated news feed rather than from a single publisher.<\/p>\n<p>-Publications went out of business, journalists were laid off or transferred from staff to freelance (if they were lucky), and previously established <strong>PR<\/strong> ties were shattered.<\/p>\n<p>-As review sites and <strong>social media<\/strong> made it possible for anybody to crowdsource opinions, peers acquired power.<\/p>\n<p>-In an attempt to incorporate <strong>social media<\/strong> into its operations, <strong>public relations<\/strong> had an identity crisis, only to have algorithms transform social media into a paid channel right in front of their eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Several thought leaders in the <strong>PR<\/strong> industry began to expand the Paid-Earned-Owned model that they had used for years to find their place in marketing: some pushed social as a separate channel, while others tried to lump it into earned media, expanding the concept of mass communication to include content created by ordinary people.<\/p>\n<p>Gini Dietrich, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sortlist.co.uk\/digital-marketing\/london-england-gb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">digital marketing specialist<\/a>, released Spin Sucks in 2014 and presented a new paradigm: the <strong>PESO model<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>It has been widely welcomed and adopted by <strong>PR experts<\/strong>, yet this extremely valuable approach has been mostly overlooked by <strong>marketing<\/strong> professionals.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Types Of Media<\/h2>\n<p>To reiterate, <strong>PESO model<\/strong> is an acronym that stands for \u201cpaid,\u201d \u201cearned,\u201d \u201cshared,\u201d and \u201cowned\u201d media. Earned media is used in a comprehensive <strong>PR<\/strong> and <strong>marketing<\/strong> plan since channels such as newspapers, trade journals, magazines, podcasts, radio, TV, and others have credibility and reach that most businesses lack.<\/p>\n<p>A mention in its outlet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sortlist.co.uk\/branding\/united-kingdom-gb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">boosts your brand&#8217;s credibility<\/a> and reliability while also broadening its reach.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Shared Media&nbsp;<\/h3>\n<p>It&#8217;s all about <strong>social media<\/strong>! Because the majority of customers utilize it, shared media has become an important part of digital marketing and <strong>public relations<\/strong> efforts. <\/p>\n<p>Branded material, original content produced on brand sites, and content shared from other sources are all included.<\/p>\n<p>However, there are two parts to shared media. It&#8217;s about getting your material out there, but it&#8217;s also about having a conversation with your audience. Interacting with consumers via shared media, such as social media, may improve a brand&#8217;s reliability. <\/p>\n<p>This may be accomplished through Instagram or Facebook Live sessions, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">LinkedIn<\/a> comment threads, and so on.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Owned Media&nbsp;<\/h3>\n<p>Paid media comes first in <strong>PESO<\/strong>, while <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">owned media comes first in the process<\/span> (though Gini admits that OESP isn&#8217;t the best name for this model!). <\/p>\n<p>Everything over which a corporation or brand has complete control is referred to as owned media.
